New Course for R&D and Biomedical Engineering Professionals runs June 15 – 17, 2015
Cambridge, Mass. – March 5, 2015 – MIT Professional Education introduces a new course on Quantitative Cardiovascular Physiology and Clinical Applications for Engineers to their Short Programs offerings today.
Running June 15 – 17, 2015 on MIT’s campus in Cambridge, MA, the course is designed for R&D engineers and professionals from the U.S. and abroad who are actively engaged in biomedical engineering applications (from hardware development to signal processing and clinical applications). The course is also geared towards hardware engineers working on wearable device development for mobile and ubiquitous vital-sign monitoring; software engineers working on algorithm development for patient monitoring applications; and clinical engineers working in hospital environments to support clinical operations.
Attendees of the three day short course will review the functional anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology of the cardiovascular system from an engineering perspective. The goal is to enable engineers and managers to understand the normal cardiovascular physiology at the systems level, predict system behavior under normal operation and pathological stresses, and to understand what commonly monitored clinical signals reveal about the state of the system.
Enrollment is now open to qualifying U.S. and international professionals through the MIT Professional Education website.
Thomas Heldt, Hermann L.F. von Helmholtz Career Development Professor in the Institute for Medical Engineering & Science; Roger G. Mark, Distinguished Professor of Health Sciences and Technology; and George C. Verghese, Henry Ellis Warren Professor of Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) will lead the new course.
"Whether through wearable devices, home-based or hospital based systems, cardiovascular monitoring has become ubiquitous, and stems from the fact that cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the developed world,” said Heldt. “This course provides participants with an in-depth understanding of the functional anatomy and physiology, including electrocardiography, of the cardiovascular system, and exposes them to technological solutions to assess cardiovascular health and to provide therapy, if necessary."
